Studio Collective doesn't impose a signature look. Every project begins with research — deep, site-specific, sometimes obsessive research on the building, the neighborhood, the city, the era it was built, and the people who passed through it.

The History Mine is a structured workbook that guides you through the same process — applied to your own home, your office, or any space you want to design with depth. The workbook moves through five excavations:

  • Building Biography — when was your space built? what architectural style? what was happening in the world that year?
  • Neighborhood Archive — what did your street look like 50 years ago? what businesses came and went? what community formed here?
  • Material Memory — what materials were native to this place before Home Depot existed? what would the original builder have used?
  • Cultural Layer — what music, art, food, and fashion defined the era of your building? how can those influences show up in a room?
  • The Echo — what single visual element — a color, a texture, a shape — can carry the history of the place into the present without feeling like a museum?

You'll finish with a one-page "History Brief" — a single sheet distilling your research into a design direction that feels authentic because it is authentic. This is how The Landsby Inn in Solvang became a Danish-California hybrid. How Hotel Figueroa honored its feminist YWCA origins. How The Surfjack captured midcentury Honolulu. The method is the same. The subject is your space.
